This makes absolutely no sense

In contrary to my last post, it seem that the Houston School District is hell bent on keeping their kids in the dark ages.

No student attending the Houston School District will be allowed to have in their possession any cellular phone device while on campus during school hours.

Never mind that in today's day and age, a high school student needs their cell phone to protect themselves against teachers who break the law, fellow students who break the law, and the wayward people who come into their schools that break the law.

HSD doesn't seem to have any vision when it comes to education and technology. I realize that some texting and other shenanigan may be going on, but with the overwhelming benefits and lower cost than toting around a laptop - you'd think they would follow in Abilene CU's footsteps?

I want to go to Abilene Christian University

How awesome is Abilene CU? In addition to all the swag you get when you sign up during freshman orientation - their students got the choice of an iPhone 3G or iPod Touch.

All I got my freshman year was a stadium seat foam thing and 15 extra pounds!

I love the iPhone and having on demand internet access as so very much enhanced my life - I can't imagine how cool it would be for an incoming student. One quote from a student in the article:

"I use it in four of my five classes," says Halie Davis, a teenager from Rankin, in west Texas, who chose the iPhone. "If your teacher says 'get out your iPhone and look up a word' you can do a Google search or check Wikipedia on the Internet. It's really fast."

This is precisely why I purchased my first smart phone. Having the freedom to post to my schools discussion boards from where ever I was (ski slope, stuck in traffic in CT on the way back from vacation). Looking up directions, emailing, taking photos and posting on Flickr, Twittering to a preselected group - all made easier. All without having to lug my laptop around, without having to find a cyber cafe (so old school, meh).

Hopefully we will not have to wait much longer for the Android platform to come out, as I foresee many more apps being developed for that phone.

Contractor Chronicles #4 - Am I done?

I have a contract that I started back in August that was supposed to last till the end of September.

It's not done yet (but not due to anything on my part).

I really need to keep moving forward with either a) another contract or b) permanent employment.

So am I good to go with this contract? You know, I'm not so sure. The work's not done, but the time limit is up. I'm not even sure I'm working with a contract at this point, if I was to do anything for the project it's technically after the end date. So do I see the light at the end of the tunnel?

Hm? Not really sure. Will have to post the outcome.
